George Town Revitalization Initiative: Phase Two Progress Update
December 2024
The George Town Revitalization Initiative continues to make significant progress as we move through Phase Two of the project. This phase focuses on upgrading key infrastructure and creating public spaces that will enhance connectivity, pedestrian safety, and the overall vibrancy of George Town. Below are the latest updates from Robson Construction, Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC), and the Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport & Development (PAHITD).
Key Updates from Phase Two of the Project:
1. Monument Wall Foundation (Robson Construction)
The construction of the monument seating wall is progressing steadily. The foundation work is well underway and will soon become an iconic feature of George Town. This seating area is designed to enhance public space, improve the city’s aesthetic appeal, and provide a place for residents and visitors to gather and enjoy the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
2. Tree Installation (Robson Construction)
As part of the Phase Two upgrades, 70% of the new mature trees have already been installed. These trees will help create a greener and more welcoming environment, contributing to the city’s sustainability goals and improving pedestrian spaces along Main Street, Edward Street, and Shedden Road. The remaining trees will be installed in the coming weeks.
3. Street Light Installation (GMC)
The installation of new street lights is ongoing and progressing as planned. This initiative is part of the broader effort to improve safety, visibility, and traffic flow in George Town. The new lighting will be installed along Main Street, as well as in the monument area, helping to enhance the overall pedestrian experience in the city.
Looking Ahead:
Utility Work: The underground utility work is nearing completion, with coordination between Robson Construction and CUC continuing to ensure that all infrastructure upgrades are completed efficiently.
Traffic Flow Adjustments: As the project progresses into its final stages, there will be further road closures and detours. These measures are essential to complete final paving and surface works. We are committed to minimizing disruptions during the busy tourist season and will provide updates and traffic advisories as needed.
Upcoming Milestones: In early 2025, expect to see the completion of the new monument garden and continued upgrades to public spaces. These changes are part of a broader effort to create a more vibrant and sustainable George Town for both residents and visitors.
We Appreciate Your Patience:
We recognize that construction can cause some disruptions, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience and understanding as we work toward a brighter, more sustainable future for George Town. The revitalization of George Town is a significant step forward for the city, and we are excited about the improvements being made.
