HEROES SQUARE UPGRADES IN TIME FOR NATIONAL CELEBRATIONS
JANUARY 2022
Heroes Square plays an important part in the George Town Revitalisation Initiative’s long-term vision for a more walkable and accessible town centre.
This central square is in the heart of George Town, between the courthouse and the House of Parliament, and celebrates Cayman’s national heroes: the many men and women who have played an important role in shaping the story of our islands.
Over the last year, the square has undergone a number of upgrades including new pavers, pedestrian crossings, street lamps, seating, planters and mature trees which have all helped to create a central and safe outdoor meeting space for get-togethers, such as the annual National Heroes Day celebrations.
A national holiday traditionally held on the fourth Monday in January to celebrate local role models past and present, every year select members of the public gather to honour these heroes, of whom several have been immortalised in the square.
There is a statue that honours women, a Mariner’s Memorial to reflect Cayman’s long seafaring heritage, and sculptures of Cayman’s national heroes including, most recently, Leila Ross-Shear, who wrote the lyrics for and composed the music to ‘Beloved Isle Cayman’, the national song of the Cayman Islands.
There is also a wall of history which sets out some of the chronological milestones in the development of the Cayman Islands and there is a Wall of Honour, which lists the names of the many Caymanians who have contributed to the betterment of the Cayman Islands.
We’re excited to be creating a city environment that blends the old and the new, with Heroes Square a leading example of this, that will bring an enhanced experience to George Town residents, working community and visitors.
