CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT ENHANCEMENT PROJECT TEAM MEETS WITH CARDINALL AVENUE BUSINESSES

JANUARY 2022

The Central Business District Enhancement Project team behind the upcoming Cardinall Avenue enhancement project, that will see the iconic shopping destination rezoned into a pedestrian-only street, recently held a meeting for local land and business owners at Cardinall Avenue’s Parcel 110, to outline the upgrades and timeline for the enhancements being made to the street.

George Town Manager and Revitalisation Initiative Coordinator, Colin Lumsden, gave an overview of the Central Business District Enhancement Project and Cardinall Avenue upgrades which, in addition to the pedestrianisation of a section of street includes key upgrades to existing underground infrastructure

Attendees were able to view detailed plans for the western section of Cardinall Avenue, between Seafarers Way and Albert Panton Street, that would close to vehicular traffic permanently once construction work commenced, led by Robson Construction.

The section of road between Albert Panton Street and Edward Street will temporarily close to vehicular traffic for enhancements to be made to infrastructure but will remain open to vehicular traffic in the long-term.

Attendees also had a first look at renders of proposed enhancements to the intersection between Cardinall Avenue, Edward Street and Main Street, which would include pedestrianising directly in front of the post office, to turn this into a pocket park with additional street lighting, landscaping and street furniture.

Initial work on the Cardinall Avenue project will start this month, with the western section of the road finally closing to vehicular traffic after that.
